Last year, Senator Ron Wyden convened a committee on Deschutes County Recreation Assets. This committee met with various user groups and developed a set of recommendations. One of these recommendations relates specifically to dogs (finding a permanent home for the dog-friendly ski/snowshoe trail), but the broader effort is also of interest to dog owners -- because many of us are also hikers, bikers, skiers, etc. Sen. Wyden will hold a meeting on the topic this Wednesday (October 15), 1 to 2:30 pm at Aspen Hall. This is not an opportunity to speak up specifically on dog access, but the meeting is open to the public -- and I encourage you to attend to hear what's happening and to show (via your mere presence) your support for quality outdoor recreation opportunities. I am on Sen. Wyden's committee, but unfortunately will not be there myself due to a conflicting commitment.

Winter is on its way and it's time to prep the Wanoga dog-friendly ski/snowshoe trail for the coming snow. We'll clear trail Saturday, October 11, from 10 to 12 noon. This involves moving branches and small logs -- there's no heavy lifting. Bring gloves and sturdy shoes, as well as clothes for what looks to be a sunny, crisp day. Email me if you'll be there so I can bring enough biscuits for the pooches.

The more we practice good dog etiquette, the stronger our case for access. We'll develop more specific etiquette guides for trails, dog parks, etc. In the meantime, here are some general tips to get started.

It's the 4th of July and we're well into summer. This is my favorite time of year, and Lani enjoys it as well. So many interesting smells in the forest, not to mention lots of water to swim in (and there's still high-country snow to romp in). DogPAC's lobbying efforts are paying off. Bend Parks and Rec continues to work on their process for providing additional off-leash access. We encouraged them to consider the Portland example of a system of accessible fenced and unfenced off-leash areas. They've taken our suggestion to heart and are moving in that direction.
Meanwhile, the Deschutes National Forest has relaxed its leash restrictions. The changes are modest, but they're a step in the right direction. The period requiring leashes on the River Trail and on Three Sisters Wilderness trails has been reduced by two weeks on either end, dogs are now legal at all times in the water, and the restriction no longer applies to the Broken Top Trail.
We welcome the progress and look forward to more access gains in coming months!
